Summary

Apache CouchDB versions prior to 1.7.0 and 2.1.1 are vulnerable due to discrepancies between the Erlang-based and JavaScript-based JSON parsers. This allows unauthorized users to submit _users documents with duplicate 'roles' keys, enabling them to grant themselves administrative privileges, including the '_admin' role. This exploit can lead to unauthorized access and potential execution of arbitrary commands on the server by leveraging the flawed access control mechanism within CouchDB.

Affected Version(s)

Apache CouchDB 1.2.0 to 1.6.1

Apache CouchDB 2.0.0 to 2.1.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
