Buffer Over-read Vulnerability in Rsync Daemon Affecting Multiple Versions
CVE-2017-16548
9.8CRITICAL
What is CVE-2017-16548?
The receive_xattr function in xattrs.c of rsync versions 3.1.2 and 3.1.3-development lacks proper validation for the null terminator in xattr names. This oversight opens the door for remote attackers to exploit the daemon, potentially leading to denial of service conditions such as heap-based buffer over-reads and application crashes. Attackers can trigger these vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted data, which may further result in unknown additional impacts on the system.
