What is CVE-2017-17458?

In earlier versions of Mercurial before 4.4.1, a vulnerability exists that can allow a specially crafted repository to execute arbitrary code. This occurs when Git subrepositories contain a malformed configuration that references a .git/hooks/post-update script. While typical usage of Mercurial limits the creation of such repositories, they can nonetheless be constructed programmatically by malicious actors, posing a significant risk if users unknowingly clone or operate in these environments. It is crucial for users to update to the latest version of Mercurial to mitigate this risk.
