What is CVE-2017-18044?

A command injection issue exists in the ContentStore/Base/CVDataPipe.dll of Commvault prior to version 11 SP6. The vulnerability arises from inadequate input validation in a message parsing function within the Commvault service, which allows an attacker to craft a malicious message that injects commands into the operating system. This flaw enables unauthorized command execution at SYSTEM level privileges on any system running the cvd daemon, and exploitation does not require authentication, making it particularly dangerous.

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
