What is CVE-2017-20229?
The MAWK tool, up to version 1.3.3-17, is susceptible to a stack-based buffer overflow which enables attackers to execute arbitrary code. This vulnerability arises from insufficient boundary checks on user-supplied input, allowing malicious actors to craft specific inputs that overflow the stack buffer. By doing so, they can execute a return-oriented programming (ROP) chain, gaining shell access with the application's privileges. This situation presents a significant risk to system integrity and user data.
