What is CVE-2018-12018?

The GetBlockHeadersMsg handler in the LES protocol of Go Ethereum (geth) versions before 1.8.11 is susceptible to an integer signedness error. This vulnerability allows attackers to exploit the system by forging a query with a -1 index value, leading to immediate crashes of the affected node. Known as the EPoD (Ethereum Packet of Death) issue, such attacks can render nodes unresponsive, severely impacting the network and its services.

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
