Summary

In Apache Derby versions 10.3.1.4 to 10.14.1.0, an attacker can exploit a vulnerability in the Derby Network Server that allows them to control the location and content of a database boot request through specially-crafted network packets. If the Derby Network Server operates without a proper Java Security Manager policy file, the attack succeeds effortlessly. Even when a security policy is applied, it must grant the necessary permissions to read the database location for the exploit to function, presenting significant security risks given the permissive default policy associated with affected releases.

Affected Version(s)

Apache Derby 10.3.1.4 to 10.14.1.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
