What is CVE-2018-16156?

A local privilege escalation vulnerability exists in PaperStream IP (TWAIN) version 1.42.0.5685 (Service Update 7) due to the FJTWSVIC service running with SYSTEM privileges. This service processes unauthenticated messages over a named pipe and can dynamically load the UninOldIS.dll library, executing the 'ChangeUninstallString' function. Since the default installation does not include this library, an attacker could place a malicious DLL with that name in a directory listed in the PATH environment variable, allowing them to escalate their privileges to SYSTEM level.

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
