Denial of Service Vulnerability in Samba by The Samba Team
CVE-2018-16841
What is CVE-2018-16841?
Samba, a software suite that facilitates file sharing and printing services, is susceptible to a denial of service attack when configured to accept smart-card authentication. This vulnerability occurs due to a flaw in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) process, where it inadvertently attempts to free the same allocated memory twice when presented with a principal in a validly signed certificate that mismatches the principal in the AS-REQ request. Although talloc, the memory management component, offers a measure of robustness against such double-free issues, this mismanagement ultimately leads to the KDC process being terminated. Organizations using vulnerable versions of Samba should consider mitigating this risk by updating to the latest versions where this issue has been addressed.
