What is CVE-2018-19410?
CVE-2018-19410 is a vulnerability found in PRTG Network Monitor, a comprehensive network monitoring tool used by organizations to oversee their IT infrastructure. This specific vulnerability allows remote unauthenticated attackers to manipulate user permissions within the software, effectively granting them read-write access, including administrative privileges. Such exploitation could severely undermine the security posture of an organization, allowing malicious actors to alter configurations, access sensitive data, or disrupt network operations.
Technical Details
The vulnerability stems from a Local File Inclusion (LFI) flaw present in versions of PRTG Network Monitor prior to 18.2.40.1683. An attacker can craft an HTTP request targeting the /public/login.htm endpoint to override the 'include' directive's attributes. By supplying specific parameters, such as 'id' and 'users', the attacker can create unauthorized user accounts with extended permissions. This exploit does not require prior authentication, making it particularly dangerous, as it can be executed by any individual with knowledge of the flaw and the ability to send HTTP requests.
Potential Impact of CVE-2018-19410
-
Unauthorized User Creation: The primary risk involves an attacker being able to create users with elevated privileges, which could lead to unauthorized access to critical system functionalities and sensitive data.
-
System Configuration Changes: With administrative access, attackers could make detrimental changes to the network monitoring settings, potentially causing downtime or operational disruptions that affect overall service availability.
-
Data Breaches: The exploitation of this vulnerability could enable attackers to access confidential information stored in the system, increasing the likelihood of data breaches that could have serious legal and financial repercussions for affected organizations.
