What is CVE-2022-50939?

e107 CMS version 3.2.1 contains a file upload vulnerability that permits authenticated administrators to exploit path traversal techniques, enabling them to overwrite arbitrary server files. This arises from insufficient input validation in the Media Manager's remote URL upload functionality (image.php). Through manipulation of the upload_caption parameter, an attacker can insert directory traversal sequences (such as '../../../') which could lead to overwriting critical system files, including configuration and executable scripts. This could ultimately result in a total compromise of the web application. The vulnerability was identified by Hubert Wojciechowski and specifically affects the image.php component in the admin interface.
