What is CVE-2023-29017?

The vm2 sandbox, which is designed to execute untrusted code while restricting access to host resources, faced a significant security flaw prior to version 3.9.15. This vulnerability arose from improper handling of host objects in the Error.prepareStackTrace function during unhandled asynchronous errors. Exploiting this oversight, attackers could escape the sandbox environment, leading to potential remote code execution on the host system. This issue has been remedied in version 3.9.15, but users utilizing earlier versions are advised to upgrade immediately.

Affected Version(s)

vm2 < 3.9.15

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
