What is CVE-2023-40591?

A vulnerability in go-ethereum (geth) allows an attacker to exploit the way the execution layer processes peer-to-peer messages. By sending specially crafted messages, an attacker can cause a vulnerable node to consume excessive amounts of memory, potentially leading to system instability or crash. It is critical for users to upgrade to geth version 1.12.1-stable or 1.12.2-unstable to mitigate this issue, as no workarounds are available.

Affected Version(s)
