What is CVE-2023-43635?

The measured boot solution in EVE OS relies on a locking mechanism using Platform Configuration Registers (PCRs) to seal and unseal cryptographic keys. However, a critical flaw exists where the code erroneously employs SHA1 PCRs instead of the more secure SHA256 PCRs. This misconfiguration can lead to machines potentially exposing their sensitive 'vault' directory, leaving vital encrypted data vulnerable to unauthorized access. Systems with disabled SHA1 PCRs can either fail to seal their keys correctly or allow attackers to extract sensitive information easily, undermining the integrity of the measured boot process that aims to protect these key assets.
