What is CVE-2024-24947?

The vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in the Programming Software Connection CurrDir functionality of AutomationDirect's P3-550E firmware, specifically version 1.2.10.9. An attacker is able to send a specially crafted network packet which can exploit this flaw, leading to a denial of service condition. The issue arises from the use of an attacker-controlled length value within a call to 'memset', which can corrupt any trailing heap allocations, ultimately destabilizing the system.
