What is CVE-2024-29187?

The WiX Toolset provides essential tools for developers to create installers for the Windows Installer system. A vulnerability exists when the installation bundle is executed with SYSTEM user privileges. During this process, the tool relies on GetTempPathW, which refers to the unsecured directory C:\Windows\Temp. This insecure setup permits standard users to manipulate the installation workflow by hijacking binaries prior to their being loaded into the application. As a result, attackers can gain elevated privileges on the system. This substantial security weakness is addressed in the recent updates, specifically in versions 3.14.1 and 4.0.5.
