What is CVE-2024-36404?

The GeoTools Java library, widely used for geospatial data handling, is susceptible to a vulnerability that enables remote code execution via user-supplied XPath expressions. This issue affects versions prior to 31.2, 30.4, and 29.6. Users running earlier versions are at risk if applications employ certain GeoTools functionalities. While upgrading to fixed versions is recommended, users can mitigate risks temporarily by removing the gt-complex jar, which may limit some functionalities in applications relying on complex content querying. Alternative jars from SourceForge are also available for older versions to provide quick access to patched releases.
