What is CVE-2024-43805?

A security vulnerability exists in JupyterLab and Jupyter Notebook environments, specifically related to how these platforms handle Markdown cells. Users can be compromised through a malicious notebook or Markdown file that, when opened, exposes any data the user has access to, and permits the malicious actor to execute arbitrary requests as if they were the victim. Affected versions include JupyterLab v3.6.8, v4.2.5, and Jupyter Notebook v7.2.2, which have received patches to address this issue. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest versions. In environments where an immediate update is not feasible, disabling specific plugins such as @jupyterlab/mathjax-extension:plugin, @jupyterlab/markdownviewer-extension:plugin, and the optional @jupyterlab/mathjax2-extension:plugin can help mitigate risks until an upgrade is possible.
