Public-Key Encryption Vulnerability in RNP Version by Ribose
CVE-2025-13470
What is CVE-2025-13470?
In RNP version 0.18.0, a flaw in the handling of the symmetric session key for Public-Key Encrypted Session Key (PKESK) packets has been identified. The session key is left uninitialized except for being zeroed out, leading to an all-zero byte array. As a result, any data encrypted with public-key encryption can be easily decrypted using this all-zero key, significantly compromising the confidentiality of sensitive information. This issue specifically affects PKESK packets, while passphrase-based encryption, handled through SKESK packets, remains unaffected. The root cause of this vulnerability lies in a regression introduced during a recent code refactoring, which neglected to properly initialize the session key for the PKESK encryption path.
