Credential Exfiltration Vulnerability in GitHub Desktop by GitHub
CVE-2025-23040
What is CVE-2025-23040?
A vulnerability in GitHub Desktop can be exploited when a user is tricked into cloning a repository via a maliciously crafted URL. This issue arises from the handling of credentials during network operations performed by Git. When a vulnerable version of GitHub Desktop initiates a clone operation that requires authentication, it may inadvertently transmit the user's credentials for a different remote host, thus enabling attackers to exfiltrate sensitive GitHub usernames and OAuth tokens. To mitigate this risk, users are advised to upgrade to GitHub Desktop version 3.4.12 or higher and revoke any compromised credentials.
