Vulnerability in Linux Kernel Affects igc Driver Trigger Logic
CVE-2025-37875
What is CVE-2025-37875?
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's igc driver has been identified, which affects the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) mechanisms. The problem arises when the PTM cycle trigger logic inadequately handles the status signals, leading to unreliable PTM operation. Users may observe timeouts during PHC2SYS operations as the status of the PTM fails to clear properly during transactions. This vulnerability is particularly concerning in instances where crashes occur, as the driver may hang during probe attempts due to improper handling of network interface card (NIC) states. The recent patch mitigates these risks by ensuring that the PTM trigger is disabled most of the time and only enabled briefly when necessary, thus significantly reducing the likelihood of operational failures.
