What is CVE-2025-64506?

Libpng, a library for processing PNG images, has a heap buffer over-read vulnerability in its png_write_image_8bit function when handling 8-bit images through the simplified write API with convert_to_8bit enabled. This vulnerability impacts images that are 8-bit grayscale with alpha channels, RGB/RGBA images, and those with incomplete row data. A flawed conditional guard allows 8-bit inputs to be processed by code designed for 16-bit inputs, leading to the potential reading of data from beyond allocated buffer boundaries. Users are recommended to update to version 1.6.51 or later to mitigate this risk.
