What is CVE-2026-104795?

The Insights Runtime Extractor in Red Hat OpenShift contains a critical vulnerability that allows an attacker to escalate privileges on the node by exploiting the DaemonSet's scanning mechanism. When the extractor forks a child process to scan its container, it improperly drops privileges by only setting the effective user ID while retaining the real and saved user IDs as root. This creates a loophole, enabling potentially malicious binaries within the container to invoke setuid(0), thus regaining full root access. As a result, an attacker could manipulate this process to execute arbitrary code within the host user namespace, leading to a complete compromise of the node. This vulnerability primarily affects users who can create pods with names matching specific patterns, which could lead to significant security breaches in multi-tenant environments.
