What is CVE-2026-111125?

CFITSIO versions through 4.7.0 contain a vulnerability that allows for a heap-based out-of-bounds read via the HCOMPRESS tile decoder. By crafting a specially designed FITS file that declares oversized tile geometry, an attacker may exploit this flaw through the input_nnybble function in fits_hdecompress.c. Successful exploitation can lead to application crashes or the disclosure of sensitive heap memory.

Affected Version(s)

cfitsio 0 <= 4.7.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
