What is CVE-2026-111159?

The libewf product by libyal contains a vulnerability that allows attackers to exploit a heap out-of-bounds read condition in the function libewf_lef_extended_attribute_read_data(). This issue arises due to improper validation of UTF-16 name and value sizes prior to being doubled. By crafting a malicious .L01/.Lx01 file that includes oversized 'ea' metadata counts, an attacker can crash the application or potentially leak uninitialized heap memory through extended attributes. This vulnerability presents a significant risk, as it may allow unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Affected Version(s)

libewf 0 <= 20260924

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
