What is CVE-2026-111216?

Netgate pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0 contain a vulnerability that allows authenticated users with gateway edit permissions to perform OS command injection. This vulnerability arises when shell metacharacters are injected into an IPv6 link-local zone index. Attackers can exploit this flaw by setting a gateway Monitor IP with an unvalidated zone that carries a malicious payload, which is then executed as a command by the dpinger process during monitoring. This could lead to unauthorized command execution with root privileges, thus compromising system security.

Affected Version(s)

pfSense CE 0 <= 2.9.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
