What is CVE-2026-111217?

Netgate pfSense CE, through version 2.9.0, is vulnerable to an OS command injection that can be exploited by authenticated users with Virtual IP edit privileges. This vulnerability arises from improper validation of the CARP Virtual Host Identifier (VHID). Attackers can manipulate the VHID to include shell metacharacters, which are then executed through specific functions when the CARP status is processed or when configuring interface IP alias settings. This poses a significant risk as it enables execution of arbitrary commands with root privileges.

Affected Version(s)

pfSense CE 0 <= 2.9.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
