What is CVE-2026-111229?

A command injection vulnerability exists in pfSense CE versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0, impacting the Captive Portal functionality. Users with the Captive Portal HA privilege can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges. This vulnerability arises when an attacker manipulates the backwardsyncip variable to connect to a malicious XMLRPC server that injects shell metacharacters into the ip or mac fields. These unescaped characters are then passed to the pfctl shell command by the captiveportal_load_pfctl function, making it possible to execute unauthorized commands on the affected system.

Affected Version(s)

pfSense CE 2.7.0 <= 2.9.0

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
