What is CVE-2026-22801?

The LIBPNG library, utilized for handling PNG image files, contains an integer truncation vulnerability that leads to potential heap buffer over-reads. This issue arises within the simplified write API functions, specifically png_write_image_16bit and png_write_image_8bit, when afflicted by negative row stride values or strides that exceed 65535 bytes. The defect was introduced in version 1.6.26 and affects multiple versions up to 1.6.53, due to adjustments made to eliminate compiler warnings on 16-bit systems. Resolution for this vulnerability is included in version 1.6.54.
