What is CVE-2026-33231?

The NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit) is an open-source suite of Python modules that facilitates Natural Language Processing research and development. In certain versions, specifically 3.9.3 and earlier, an unauthenticated remote shutdown vulnerability exists in the WordNet Browser HTTP server. This issue allows a malicious actor to send a GET /SHUTDOWN%20THE%20SERVER request, which leads to an immediate termination of the server process via os._exit(0), effectively resulting in a denial of service. A patch has been implemented in commit bbaae83db86a0f49e00f5b0db44a7254c268de9b to resolve this vulnerability.
