WebSub Vulnerability in W3C Recommendation Exposes Subscriber Data
CVE-2026-50571
5.7MEDIUM
What is CVE-2026-50571?
The WebSub recommendation contains a vulnerability that allows attackers to exploit the intent-verification protocol. Specifically, subscribers may inadvertently expose sensitive data by echoing the hub.challenge value without proper media typing. This flaw enables an attacker to create a crafted verification request that can execute malicious HTML or JavaScript code, permitting unauthorized access to private data or session information in the victim's browser. Implementing proper safe media typing and enforcing X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff are necessary to mitigate such vulnerabilities effectively, as evidenced by demonstrations on platforms like WebSub Rocks.
