What is CVE-2026-63120?

The pghoard backup and restore tool, utilized for PostgreSQL databases, contains a vulnerability that stems from an incomplete path traversal fix. This issue allows attackers with write access to the backup object storage (such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Microsoft Azure) to perform unauthorized file writes and create directories outside the specified PostgreSQL data directory. Specifically, when a database administrator executes a restore operation using a maliciously crafted delta backup manifest, they may inadvertently expose the system to arbitrary file writes, which can lead to severe security breaches. This vulnerability has been addressed in version 2.7.2.
