What is CVE-2026-71477?

The mise development tools suite, which manages tools like node and python, harbored a vulnerability that existed prior to version 2026.7.1. This issue allows local users with specific user and group IDs to replace a root-installed executable. This occurs because release tar archives do not normalize ownership when extracting files from the packaging/standalone/install.envsubst. As a result, if MISE_INSTALL_PATH targets a shared directory such as /usr/local/bin, unauthorized users can execute malicious commands by substituting legitimate executables. The vulnerability has been addressed in version 2026.7.1.
