What is CVE-2026-71972?

The U-Boot bootloader, up to version 2026.10-rc5, contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability due to improper handling of RLE8-compressed BMP images in the video_display_rle8_bitmap function. An attacker can exploit this flaw by supplying a crafted BMP image, potentially leading to memory corruption adjacent to the framebuffer. This exploitation may result in crashes or unpredictable behavior of the bootloader, presenting a significant risk to system stability and security.
