What is CVE-2026-79699?

A security flaw exists in the containers/storage library where a specially crafted tar archive containing a malicious whiteout header can lead to the extraction destination directory being replaced with an arbitrary file. This issue occurs during the processing by methods like storage/pkg/archive.UnpackLayer, ApplyLayer, or ApplyUncompressedLayer, posing a significant risk to systems utilizing this library.
