What is CVE-2026-93268?

A vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's ext4 file system module where an improper management of inode image sizes during the mount operation can lead to a deadlock condition. This is caused by a circular lock dependency formed during the inode dirty marking process when an active jbd2 handle is held. Specifically, the expand functionality for extra inode sizes may not execute properly, resulting in the potential for system hang-ups. Although the situation represents a minor loss of functionality, it can be addressed using e2fsck if needed. This vulnerability underscores the importance of robust file system management and the necessity for timely updates to maintain system integrity.
