Heap-based Buffer Overflow in RPM Package Management System by Red Hat
CVE-2026-95520
7.1HIGH
What is CVE-2026-95520?
A vulnerability exists within the RPM Package Management System that allows for a heap-based buffer overflow. This occurs when an untrusted RPM package with a declared RPMTAG_LONGFILESIZES value of 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF is processed. The flaw leads to an integer overflow in the iterReadArchiveNext() function, causing a buffer allocation to be reduced to a single byte. Consequently, an attacker can exploit this issue by writing data that exceeds the bounds of the buffer through the payload's independently-controlled cpio filesize field. This vulnerability can be triggered via commands such as rpm2cpio, rpm2archive, and rpm -qlvp when handling untrusted packages.
