What is CVE-2026-18216?

The Backup Migration plugin for WordPress, prior to version 2.1.7, contains a security flaw whereby it fails to adequately restrict the automatic login feature following a restoration of backups. This oversight permits a user with administrative privileges on one site within a multisite network to gain unauthorized administrative access to another site in the same network. The vulnerability simplifies the process of session hijacking, allowing the malicious actor to obtain a long-lived authenticated session without needing valid credentials or bypassing two-factor authentication mechanisms.

Affected Version(s)

Backup Migration 0 < 2.1.7

Exploit Proof of Concept (PoC)

PoC code is written by security researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability can be exploited. PoC code is also a key component for weaponization which could lead to ransomware.
